The Birmingham Business Journal has reported that financial services provider, Regions Financial Corporation, has signalled its intent to invest US$30.5 million in Nashville to build a disaster recovery center.
The facility is expected to be ready and operational by July, and will expand on the company's existing data center in Nashville.
Construction will entail replacing the mainframe in the center, adding tape and disk storage and connecting it to Birmingham with large data pipes, the company said.
Birmingham was recently rated as one of the cheapest ranked cities in term of total annual operating costs for data center builds, by New Jersey-based consultants Boyd Company. According to Boyd, the city is ideally suited for the financial services industry in light of its access to a local pool of qualified graduates at the University of Alabama, Birmingham and proximity to Birmingham International Airport.
