Diamond cooling technology company Akash Systems has launched the first AMD-powered diamond cooled AI servers.

Powered by AMD Instinct MI350X GPUs, the servers have been manufactured by MiTAC Computing and come equipped with Akash's proprietary diamond cooling technology.

Each server is comprised of eight AMD MI350X GPUs, two AMD Epyc 9005 CPUs, AMD Pensando Pollara 400 AI NICs, and the latest ROCm software stack. The company has already received a $300m initial order for the AMD-powered servers in the US.

The servers are fully warrantied under existing AMD and manufacturer warranties, Akash said, adding that it plans to release diamond cooling solutions for additional AMD Instinct GPU systems later this year, including the AMD Instinct MI355X GPU and future iterations.

Diamond has the highest thermal conductivity of any known material, enabling heat to be removed five times faster than the current industry standard, copper. Akash uses synthetic diamond materials on the chips to remove heat, with the company claiming to be able to reduce GPU hotspot temperatures by 10°C (50°F).

Additionally, Akash says its cooling technology is projected to reduce data center energy consumption and increase FLOPs/Watt by up to 15 percent per server in facilities running at temperatures up to 50°C (122°F), compared to the common standard of 24-29°C (75-85°F).

Founded in 2016 by Ejeckam and Ty Mitchell, Akash Systems originally developed its gallium nitride-on-diamond (GaN-on-diamond) technology for use in orbit for satellite radios.

Backed by venture capital investors Khosla Ventures and Founders Fund, the firm has secured more than $20m across six funding rounds. Last month, Akash announced Indian cloud provider NxtGen AI had adopted an unknown number of diamond cooled servers featuring Nvidia H200 GPUs.
