With Meta set to take a 49 percent stake in data labeling company Scale AI, its biggest customers are seeking alternatives.
Meta is investing $15 billion into Scale, and will hire its CEO Alexandr Wang and key staff for a new 'superintelligence' AI division in Meta.
Wang will remain on Scale AI's board, with the company set to “substantially expand” its commercial relationship with Meta “to accelerate deployment of Scale’s data solutions.”
Scale AI hit $870 million in revenue in 2024, with most coming from a small cadre of giant technology companies - all of which are believed to be concerned about the semi-acquisition.
Google spent $150 million on Scale AI's services last year, Reuters reports. The company is now looking to move much of that workload, which includes Gemini, Waymo self-driving, and other machine learning projects, to other providers.
OpenAI has already cut its use of Scale, while Microsoft and xAI are also planning to pare back their spend. Scale rivals Turing, Labelbox, and Handshake are expected to benefit from the deal with Meta.
