Afghanistan's government has launched a 5G pilot in the country.

As reported by the Kabul Tribune, the Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has launched 5G services in Kabul on a pilot basis.

The Ministry has upgraded 74 base stations with 5G technology in the country's capital on a trial basis, with a view to extending 5G services to other provinces once technical preparations and testing are completed.

Kabul Tribune reports that 46 new telecom sites have been built and put into operation since the start of this year, with 186 additional sites currently under construction.

The publication's report suggests that the Ministry has partnered with Afghan telco Afghan Wireless Communications Company (AWCC) to push the 5G pilot.

AWCC confirmed it had started testing 5G equipment last month, noting that it plans to eventually deliver 5G nationwide. The carrier has around 5.5 million customers.

Afghanistan's plans for a 5G network follow the launch of 5G services in neighboring Pakistan last month.
