Colocation facilities are currently enjoying a boom in occupancy rates. According to industry estimates, colocation centers in the UK are 80 per cent full, a dramatic increase from the 25 per cent rate witnessed five years ago.
According to EQSN, a colocation company based in Glasgow, this shortage is likely to mean an increase in colocation prices this year, The Scotsman reports.
The announcement of new colocation projects, including the Royal Bank of Scotland-backed data center, Scolocate, in the western outskirts of Edinburgh and TelecityRedbus' central London facility Powergate, however, are not typical of the current thinking towards new colo builds.
Many potential investors are still dissuaded from engaging in new projects following their experiences of the dot.com bubble and burst, despite the fact that it appears that data centers in the UK could reach full occupancy within the next 18 months.
