A 5MW data center is set to be built in Tripura, a state in northeast India.

The foundation stone for the Rs 2 billion ($22m) facility was laid yesterday, with the Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, in attendance.

The data center is being developed by Bharti Airtel, one of India’s largest telcos. Tripura Info has reported that the facility will span 80,000 sq ft (7,432 sqm), but the source of this figure is unclear. The facility will be located in Chanmari, located near Tripura’s state capital Agartala.

Details about the data center’s development timeline are also unclear.

None of the country’s northeastern states, which include Assam, Meghalaya, Manipura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, are data center hotspots, and most of the country’s facilities are located around its main metropolitan areas, including New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai.

Bharti Airtel recently tapped IBM to augment Airtel Cloud, which is the telco’s cloud offering. Launched in August 2025, it offers Infrastructure-as-a-Service and Platform-as-a-Service.
