A small AI data center is being proposed in northern Ontario, Canada.

First reported by NorthBayNipissing, local firm Almaguin Data is planning to place a containerized AI data center in Armour Township.

According to township documents, Almaguin Data is hoping to develop a 2MW “sovereign AI compute facility” on a 6.8 acres site in the Hwy. 520 Industrial Park.

Work could start in Q4 2026 and see the first CA$5-7 million (US$3.6-5m) phase completed by Q2 2027.

The modular containerized site could eventually reach 10MW, with CA$15-20m (US$11-14.6m) in investment planned over three to five years. The site could rely on natural gas for backup power.

The site reportedly has confirmed capacity available by Ontario electricity transmission and distribution service provider Hydro One.

NorthBayNipissing reports, however, that township officials are pausing to study noise and other impacts before saying yes to the proposals.

Set up late last year by local entrepreneur Matthew Fuller, Almaguin Data pitches itself as “the Canadian sovereign backbone for high-performance compute.”
