A gigawatt-scale data center campus has been proposed in Georgia.

A Development of Regional Impact application has been filed with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for a data center campus in Irwin County in south central Georgia.

Premier Data Center Development, LLC aims to develop a five-building campus spanning 4.22 million sq ft (392,050 sqm) on approximately 1,000 acres outside the community of Mystic.

The campus, known as Project Arrowhead in filings, could total 1.25GW of capacity. Georgia Power is in the process of completing an energy study for the project.

The first phase of the development could go live in 2030, reaching full build-out by 2034. Up to $6 billion could be invested.

The properties set to host the campus are owned by Fletcher Marcus D Trust and Sirrom Farms LLC.

Part of the land for this project was previously earmarked for a separate data center project called the Irwin Forward Tech Park. The project would have totaled some 17 buildings, but was withdrawn by the applicant in March despite the county’s planning commission recommending approval.

Irwin County commissioners this month passed a data center-related ordinance to set standards on issues such as setbacks and noise abatement.

A Change.org petition against data centers in Irwin County has garnered more than 580 signatures at the time of writing. The petition claims the site is set to be occupied by Google, but it is unclear if this is true.

Atlanta and its surrounding areas have traditionally been a Tier 2 market, but increased demand for data centers has resulted in a surge of data center proposals. DRI applications for more than a dozen campuses, totaling tens of millions of square feet across dozens of buildings, have been filed over the last couple of years. While many are in Atlanta’s traditional data center heartland around Fulton County, applications have been filed for projects across the Peach State.
