AI computing has given data centre batteries a second job. Beyond riding through grid disturbances, they must now smooth facility‑wide power draw as training clusters swing tens to hundreds of megawatts within seconds, fast enough to destabilise the grid, and now a condition of connection. This duty demands symmetric high‑rate cycling, with batteries charging as fast as they discharge, thousands of times a day.
Traditional chemistries can’t support it. Their anodes hit hard limits under fast charge, causing lithium plating and forcing operators to oversize battery banks by roughly ten times just to absorb AI power spikes.
XNO®, Echion’s niobium‑oxide anode technology, was built for this exact regime. Integrated into UPS or BBU racks, XNO® delivers true high‑power performance using a fraction of the energy capacity and footprint of conventional systems. This session explains the chemistry and shows, through a worked example, how XNO® enables practical, space‑efficient AI power smoothing.
