Connect | APAC // Debate: Can APAC match Singapore’s sustainability ambitions, or would regulation slow regional growth?

Across APAC, the race to deliver new capacity often takes precedence over sustainability. While several markets have introduced standards and incentives, few enforceable regulations exist and most progress is driven by customer demand and cost considerations rather than policy. Singapore is the clear exception, having established the most advanced sustainability policy framework for data centres in the region through initiatives such as the Green Data Centre Roadmap, energy efficiency standards and sustainability-weighted capacity allocation exercises. This raises a critical question for the wider market: would the adoption of a similar regulatory approach help accelerate genuine sustainability progress across APAC, or would it undermine the flexibility and growth that have fuelled its rapid expansion?
