How is ‘big tech’ balancing sustainable computing with exponential growth?
Given the gargantuan power requirements of the data center industry - equal to 2% of global electricity use, the industry has found itself, and it’s carbon footprint under great scrutiny from the public, the private sector and policymakers alike.
With hyperscalers responsible for vast swathes of energy use, the world’s largest technology companies are also closely wedded to the sustainable path of IT and hardware reuse, but what are the challenges in balancing resource efficiency with exponential growth?
Can a move towards a circular economy tip the scale in favour of slowing the climate crisis or is a more radical approach to resource efficiency and ‘green IT’ required?
