US enterprise data center specialist CyrusOne has announced that its second data center in Phoenix, Arizona was completed in record time.

The company built Phoenix II (a.k.a. Chandler II) from the ground up in just 107 days - it believes this was the fastest data center construction project to ever take place in the US.

CyrusOne adds that the speed was down to the modular construction of its data centers.

The facility offers 60,000 sq ft of white space, out of which half has already been leased.

Need for speed
“A typical enterprise could spend significantly more capital and could take almost three years longer to build the same facility that CyrusOne just completed in 107 days,” said Gary Wojtaszek, president and CEO, CyrusOne.

“We’ve seen strong demand in our Phoenix market. We completely leased our first facility in 18 months, built our second facility on the campus, and pre-leased 100 percent of what we just commissioned, all in less than two years. Enterprises, including the Fortune 100 cloud provider leasing space in the new facility, now recognize that we can quickly and efficiently scale to meet their constantly changing IT demands.”

Phoenix II was designed for an average draw of 250 watts per sq ft, with the ability to go up to 1,000 watts per sq ft for customers with extremely dense specialized equipment, making it suitable for High Performance Computing (HPC) projects.

During the building process, CyrusOne employed its ‘Massively Modular’ approach to engineering, which assembles cooling, power, space, and redundant systems into standardized building blocks. It says this method allows for construction of huge data centers in approximately 12-16 weeks – the same amount of time that it takes computer manufacturers to build all the IT equipment to be housed in the facility.

Phoenix II will eventually grow to 240,000 sq ft of white space, being able to deliver up to 24 megawatts of power.

CyrusOne hopes that in a few years, it will be able to grow the total capacity of the Phoenix campus to a massive 1,000,000 sq ft, with over 100 megawatts of power, making it one of the largest and most energy-efficient facilities in the US.

The company went public in 2013 and earlier this month received US$600 million in unsecured loans to expand its operations across the US, Europe and Asia.
