China Mobile's international subsidiary has opened a global network centre (GNC) at the Tseng Kwan O industrial estate in Hong Kong - marking the first cable landing outside of mainland China by any Chinese mobile operator.

The facility, China Mobile's largest network center, covers an area of about 9,700 sq m with a floor space of about 24,000 sq m. China Mobile International (CMI), broke ground in August 2012, and two years later the facility has 1,920 racks online.

Hong Kong move
The telecommunication player - one of China's top three mobile operators - said the GNC is an international Tier 3+ data center, which boasts optimal electricity supply, 2N reserved capacity, double electrical circuit security, double fireproof design and advanced recirculating cooling.

It is designed according to the Gold Certificate Standard of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), created by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). It also meets the certified standard of the Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Society.

China Mobile says the center will have high standards in eco-friendly initiatives including resource reduction, recyclable practice, electricity efficiency and green interior environment.

Four Centers in one
The center serves as a global telecom Hub, a cable landing station, a global network operations center (GNOC) and an Internet data center (IDC) for China Mobile.

The telecommunication player said the newly opened GNC is the most significant network hub of China Mobile, as well as the first cable landing station built by China carriers outside Mainland China.

The center provides one-stop services, including IPLC, IEPL, MPS VPN, IP Transit, IPX, VoIP, mobile roaming, data center and cloud computing to China Mobile’s global customers and partners.

“The opening of the global network center not only enhances the international business infrastructure and service standards of China Mobile, but also further strengthens the position of Hong Kong as the global communications hub,” said Dr. Tiger Lin, chairman of China Mobile International.

CMI was established by China Mobile in December 2010 to build its international business. Headquartered in Hong Kong, CMI has representative office in Beijing and subsidiaries in the USA and the UK.

Apart from the GNC project, China Mobile has been expanding its infrastructure on a large scale across the whole country.
Early this month, the carrier launched a large data center with a capability of hosting 10,900 racks in Gansu Province in West China. This June, it broke ground for a large data center capable of hosting 13,000 racks in Chongqing Liangjiang International Cloud Computing Park in Southwest China.
