Telekomunikasi Indonesia International Pte Ltd (Telin Singapore) has been awarded the first plot of land at the Singapore Data Centre Park (DCP) for the development of its new data center and telecommunication hub.

Telin Singapore is a fully owned subsidiary of PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International, which is itself owned by state-run operator PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom), Indonesia’s largest telecommunication and network provider. Incorporated in 2007, Telin Singapore currently operates a data center out of Changi North Way in Singapore.

The Telin Singapore Data Centre and Telecommunication Hub will strengthen Telin Singapore's infrastructure to support Telkom’s growth and international network expansion. On this front, the new data center will be connected directly to Indonesia via its own submarine cable systems. Construction of the 20,000 sq m facility on the 8,000 sq m site will commence in 2015, and the facility is expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2016.

“Telin Singapore Data Centre and Telecommunication Hub is an important and strategic investment that the Telkom Group has undertaken," said CEO of Telin Singapore Septika N Widyasrini in a report on Channel News Asia. "This state-of-the-art data center and telecommunication hub investment will help to propel Telkom Group to embrace its future growth strategy through borderless communication and virtualization of services."

The DCP is a joint initiative between the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and JTC. As we reported earlier this year, the ambitious project in the western part of Singapore will see an area of about 13 hectares set aside in land scarce Singapore for the building of six to eight data center buildings, providing up to 105,000 sq m of rackable space.

This development is of particular interest because the completion date for the DCP had been shifted back several times. Originally scheduled to be ready in 2013, the official word in June this year was that operations is slated to commence at the start of 2016. This latest development shifts it to the end of the year, though it is also the first announcement by a data center operator.

“In our vision to build the world’s first Smart Nation, data centers are an important infrastructure that supports our growing digital economy, which includes the hosting of mission-critical operations and enabling activities such as cloud computing and data analytics,” said Khoong Hock Yun, assistant chief executive of the development group at the IDA, and chairman of the data center park implementation committee, in a statement sent to DatacenterDynamics.

“IDA, in collaboration with EDB and JTC, has established that data centers also serve as important telecommunications and Internet traffic aggregation nodes, thereby enhancing connectivity within and to Singapore," he continued. “The Data Centre Park’s ready-built infrastructure will feature redundancy and resiliency, enhancing Singapore’s competitiveness within the data center landscape.”
