Eric Shepcaro, CEO of the data center services company Telx, has passed away, the company announced Tuesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Eric Shepcaro, our CEO, a visionary and an inspiring leader,” Ron Sterbenz, corporate communications officer at Telx, said in a statement posted on the company's website. “No words can express our sadness and gratitude for his mentoring and contributions to Telx, and our collective thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Shepcaro has served as Telx' chief executive since 2007. Prior to that he has held roles of executive VP at AT&T and of VP at Sprint.

New York City-based Telx was founded in 2000 and today operates 19 data centers across all major US markets. The company has facilities in the New York metro, Silicon Valley, Dallas Fort Worth, Chicago and other key regions.

On Shepcaro's watch, Telx added several of the data centers in its portfolio (including some in new markets for the company), developed its strategy to capture market share in the new cloud-oriented world and went through an acquisition. In 2011, US investment firms Abry Partners and Berkshire Partners bought Telx from its previous owner GI Partners for an undisclosed sum.

The company did not provide any further details in regards to Shepcaro's death, citing the wishes of his family. “Respectful of the family's wishes, other details will remain private,” Sterbenz said in his statement.
