Cable & Wireless has teamed up with colocation provider Equinix to offer a hybrid cloud computing solution, extending its UK offer worldwide.

The telco said the new service will be based on its Flexible Computing product in the UK, but its global offering will expand to offer colocation, managed hosting and cloud computing services.

Cable & Wireless has a network spanning 20,500km which includes one of the UK’s largest fiber networks for business users.

Equinix operates in 38 markets in EMEA, Asia Pacific and the Americas.

Cable & Wireless managing director of wholesale, mid-markets and global markets Nick Lambert said the Equinix data center footprint is closely aligned with Cable & Wireless’ existing network and working with Equinix will help Cable & Wireless to ensure service delivery.

“Telcos are natural providers of enterprise-class infrastructure services,” Lambert said.

“Our ambition is to create an ecosystem of best-of-breed solutions from different service providers that can deliver a flexible and risk-free cloud computing roadmap for customers.”

A number of telecommunication players have been teaming up with colocation in recent times to set up cloud computing offerings. In the UK last year, Savvis teamed up with Virgin Media Business to offer a pay-as-you-go cloud service aimed at the medium-sized business in the UK.

The partnership has allowed Virgin to maximise the use of its fiber optic network during off peak consumer hours and allowed Savvis to tap in to the middle market.
