The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, has relocated from its Tampa, Florida data center to the CyrusOne Dallas/Carrollton facility in Texas.

The foundation launched a public request for proposals for a new data center location in the continental US for colocation, last October.

Wikimedia’s director of technical operations and lead operations architect, Mark Bergsma said, as part of this process, the charity evaluated more than 39 bids, conducted 18 site visits, and arrived at a shortlist of three vendors.

In January 2013 Wikimedia migrated its main infrastructure to its now primary data center in Ashburn from its previous facility in Tampa - where the foundation first started.

“[Wikimedia] was looking for a facility that can handle the full load of its global traffic in case of an emergency and can also handle partial load at all times,” Bergsma said.
