TCC Technology (TCCT) in Thailand has entered into a joint venture with Tokyo-based Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) Inc to deploy cloud infrastructure in Thailand, according to theBangkok Post. TCCT is a major data center operator in Thailand, while IIJ specializes in cloud and ICT services with strong roots as an ISP in Japan.
The focus will be on hybrid cloud, which combines public cloud with private cloud or traditional on-premises infrastructure to enjoy the best of both worlds. Increasingly, enterprises see such an approach as a viable means to leverage the advantages of the cloud while still adhering to compliance regulations and data sovereignty rules.
Best of both?
The venture plans to combine the strengths of both companies to capture a slice of the cloud market with the shortest time-to-market. Both firms are also looking to the partnership as a means to expand into regional markets for cloud and data center services respectively, said the report.
“Our Japanese partner wants to make Thailand the digital hub of the region and use the country as a springboard to tap regional markets,” Panot Sirivadhanabhakdi, chairman of the executive board of TCCT in the report, noting that full operation is scheduled for March. “The partnership will also enable us to expand our data centre service throughout Asia.”
TCCT currently operates three data centers in Thailand: One at the Empire Tower Data Center (ETDC) in the central business district area of Bangkok, the Bangna Data Center (BNDC) near the international airport serving Bangkok, and a data center at Amata Nakorn (AMDC) in the eastern part of Thailand.
As we reported last year, the Thai government’s new digital economy policy entails turning Thailand into a digital hub in ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Networks) through the use of information technology (IT). To this end, the government has plans to enhance its IT infrastructure capacity and the Board of Investment of Thailand had also approved of data center investments to the tune of $30.8M last year.
While challenges remain, Thailand does have an inherent advantage as a data center location, including its strategic position as the gateway into countries that make up the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), many of which share their borders with Thailand.
DatacenterDynamics (DCD)’s second global conference and expo in Thailand takes place this Friday, 28 January 2016, with the theme “Moving towards a cloud powered digital economy”.
The event will bring international thought leaders from SuperNap and Amazon, as well as industry leaders to share and learn from their successes in data centers and the cloud. For more information,
