Digital signage firm Stratacache has acquired a data center in Dayton, Ohio, that was previously used by EDS to support GM manufactiring plants across the region.

The company’s new facility offers 113,000 square feet of raised floor space, as well as room for a 550-seat support desk.

A steal

After HP bought Electronic Data Services for $13.9 billion in 2008, the company halved the number of data centers used by the subsidiary and the Dayton data center went on the chopping block.

Following an auction held by commercial real estate investment group Stag Industrial, Stratacache picked up the property for just $560,000, Dayton Business Journal reports.

The facility has three diesel generators with extended life underground tanks and features redundant, dual grid power feeds.

“Many of our competitors are virtual without offices and production or logistics capabilities. They’re using third-party offshore support teams and driving services from a public cloud platform. Stratacache is taking the opposite approach,” Chris Riegel, Stratacache’s CEO, said.

An official ribbon cutting ceremony is to be announced in the next few weeks, with plans to hire more than 200 local people to run the facility.
