SPTel, the network communications arm of Singapore Power Group (SP), has rolled out a suite of dark fiber and island-wide Ethernet services that will run off its own fiber optic networks in Singapore.

SPTel has been installing fiber networks run alongside SP’s nationwide power lines with the goal of creating an extensive network to a strategic list of 16 data centers across Singapore by the end of 2016. SPTel says it is focused on telecommunications carriers, data centers, retail service providers and enterprises as a first step.

Established data centers such as Keppel DigiHub, Equinix’s SG1 and Global Switch are already linked to its grid, with many new data centers being added as they open for business. Kingsland Data Center that launched last October is already on SPTel’s network, while 1-Net North, which held its grand opening ceremony on Monday is also due to be wired up by this year.

In addition, SPTel says it will be providing fiber links to the Woodlands Causeway in the north of Singapore, and the Tuas Second Link in the west, offering the possibility of cross country connectivity to the State of Johor in Malaysia.

“With growing demands for more extensive connectivity, more bandwidth, and greater business agility, SPTel is well-placed to deliver the competitive edge businesses need by being more flexible with the solutions we provide,” she said.

SPTel says it has already signed on customers such as China Telecom and Hong Kong-based HKT, as well as media firm MediaCorp.
