Systems integrators Dimension Data has cut operating costs for sports brand Puma at its Hong Kong data center by 30% in a modernization drive focusing on greater energy efficiency.

As Puma APAC was forced to move its offices, it asked Dimension Data to design and install a green data center, which would eliminate the wastage in its existing use of power.

The IT systems integrator was asked to tackle the power consumption not just of the IT but mechanical, electrical and lighting operations.

According to Dimension Data it was given two months to complete the project – that would usually take around six months.

Dimension Data said it tackled data center infrastructure management (DCIM) as a priority.

Dimension Data’s Hong Kong managing director Steve Lam said the rationale was to monitor all data center functions, from computing to cooling including power management, networking and storage, at both rack and regional levels.

“Puma’s goals for the data center were ambitious,” Lam said.

He said Puma had asked for cost savings and efficiencies in a relatively short timeline.

The new infrastructure has a modular design that can be expanded upon by increments to accommodate future growth, with capacity upgradeable to 48kW.

Puma APAC’s head of IT Richard Tang said: "we evaluated various vendors with similar abilities on this project.”

According to Tang, Puma selected Dimension Data for its global coverage, experience and professional advice.

"They [Dimension Data] lived up to their reputation, first taking the time to understand the metrics and outcomes that were important to us, then proposing a design that incorporated these and reflected their close attention to detail," Tang said.
