German data center provider NewTelco has opened a new data center in Karlstein am Main, Germany.
The facility was officially launched on November 30, 2023, and is located in the Karlstein municipality just east of Frankfurt.
The colocation data center has an IT capacity of 5MW and is designed for medium-sized customers.
The location in Karlstein was chosen because four of Germany's power grids meet in the region, meaning that the data center has access to two separate grids. In addition, there is a fiber optic ring connecting Frankfurt and Karlstein.
According to NewTelco managing director Matthias Hartmann, it is hoped that the data center will attract more IT companies to the area, thus creating more jobs.
Plans for the data center - dubbed MainRZ - were first shared in 2021, at the time with an expected launch date of H2 2022. Those plans, shared by the managing director at the time Jens Leuchters, also suggested that the site would have its own dedicated photovoltaic system and that there was a "concept for using the heat we produce in collaboration with the local community."
The following year, NewTelco joined the German Datacenter Association.
According to UpStack Marketplace, MainRZ is located at 12 Am Kieswerk, 12, Karlstein am Main, spans 750 sqm (8,075 sq ft), and is designed to a Tier IV standard. DCD has contacted the company for more information about the site.
NewTelco was founded in 2005 and is based in Frankfurt. In addition to the Karlstein data center, NewTelco has another facility in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and others in Ukraine and Georgia.
Germany has recently implemented fairly strict data center legislation, the Energy Efficiency Act, which requires new data centers to have a PUE of 1.2 and certain heat reuse efforts, the former of which will not come into action till 2026.
