The Neocortex AI system has been chosen to participate in the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) two-year pilot plan to democratize access to AI technology and research.
Housed at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), Neocortex AI is one of six AI supercomputers in the US that will be utilized in the pilot. The system incorporates two Cerebras CS-2 AI servers, each powered by Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine (WSE-2) processors. Each CS-2 server contains 850,000 cores and 40GB of on-chip memory.
Earlier this month, Cerebras said it would make its Condor Galaxy AI supercomputer system available to NAIRR researchers.
“The National AI Research Resource program will play a key role in defining AI’s impact on scientific and engineering research, influencing daily life in the US and across the globe,” said Paola Buitrago, PSC’s director of artificial intelligence and big data and principal investigator for Neocortex. “We are thrilled to actively contribute to the program’s initial pilot phase through PSC’s Neocortex AI-specialized supercomputer.”
He added: “Our team is eager and prepared to provide cutting-edge computing technologies and specialized expertise, supporting researchers as they explore the frontiers of both fundamental and applied AI research. We believe in the program’s potential to shape the AI landscape and look forward to playing a key role in its success.”
Launched by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with ten federal agency partners including the Department of Energy and the National Institute of Health, the pilot aims to democratize access to AI technology and research. It will provide scientists across the US with access to high-performance compute systems; high-quality datasets; catalogs of testbeds and educational materials; training tools and user support mechanisms.
The Delta AI system at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications in Illinois and the Frontera and the Lonestar6 systems at the Texas Advanced Computing Center have also been selected for inclusion in the pilot program.
