Hetzner South Africa has started Phase 1 construction of a new data center in Gauteng, South Africa, it said will come online later this year.

The data center will provide 1,200 sq m of space for hosting – enough for 12,000 servers - according to local news site Business Tech.

Hetzner said it plans to build four more data centers on the same site to create a data center park.

Du’s datamena sets up PoP with Saudi telco
Saudi Arabian telco Integrated Telecom Company (ITC) and carrier-neutral data center operator datamena are establishing a multi-service Point of Presence (PoP) in datamena’s data center in Dubai.

The PoP will allow ITC to create a network-to-network interface (NNI) with regional and international service providers that have a PoP presence in datamena, including Middle East telecom company du.

Georges Jaber, ITC VP of wholesale, business sales and solutions, said by interconnecting with major regional providers ITC has more capacity for global expansion.

ITC has an independent 17,000km national fiber network as well as data centers across the Kingdom and seven international gateways connecting the Kingdom to the rest of the world.

Datamena was launched by du in 2012 and hosts the UAE Internet Exchange (UAE-IX), managed by Internet Exchange operator Germany’s DE-CIX, and provides data center services in alliance with Equinix.

Teraco hosts China Telecom services
China Telecom’s services business China Telecom Global is offering services out of Teraco Data Environment’s data center in South Africa.

Teraco Data Environments CEO Lex van Wyk said the telco’s presence in the carrier neutral data center opens up business opportunities for existing Terraco community members.

China Telecom said it is the largest fixed line service and third largest mobile telecommunications provider in the world.

“Our clients now have the opportunity to connect freely with service providers and carriers in Asia, providing local businesses direct access to a whole new market of consumers,” van Wyk said.

China Telecom said by working with what it said is one of the most connected data centers in South Africa it is strengthening its gateway position for connecting the Middle East and Africa with Asia.

The data center has more than 54,000 sq ft in floor space and offers connectivity to the NAPAfrica peering service and the African CloudeXchange which sells dedicated cloud services.

CDNetworks set up Oman PoP
CDNetworks has partnered with Oman-based telecommunications provider Omantel to improve delivery of internet content, applications and ecommerce throughout Oman and the region with a Point of Presence. 

Omantel has more than 50 direct connections with international partners, over nine submarine cable landings and multiple terrestrial border crossings and has major plans for expansion.

CDNetworks president and CCO Jeff Kim said by partnering with the telco it can reach the Middle East market, which has a population of three million people, 68% of which are internet users.

“Statistics show that the online population in Oman is embracing ecommerce and online transactions,” Kim said.

CDNetworks already has PoPs in the Middle East in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq and Israel.
