One of Belgium’s largest banking institutions KBC Group is planning to build two new data centers near Budapest, Hungary. The facilities, exact replicas of each other, will replace existing 23 data centers in 18 locations in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

The company said Wednesday that it had made plans for the €100m project back in 2007 and is now awaiting permission from Hungarian authorities -expected to be issued soon - to start construction. KBC projects an annual savings of €10m, once the new facilities are online.

The redundant data centers outside of Budapest will be located about 20km away from each other, connected by 37km of fiber. Each facility will consist of four 5,400-sq-ft modules. The first two halls in each data center will be brought online immediately, setting aside the remaining two for future expansion.

KBC has a similar double-data center set up in Belgium which will remain operational.
