In the process of migrating to AWS, Nib shut down seven of its data centers in March: five in Australia and two in New Zealand.

The migration to the cloud has been ongoing since Nib first moved its corporate health insurance branch GU Health to AWS in 2019, a process that began in 2015. That first migration enabled the closing of three data centers.

Among the more recent migrations are several of the Extreme Inherent Risk (EIR) systems.

Brendan Mills, CIO of Nib Group, said of the migration: "AWS allows Nib to expand its current use and future exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the ways that AI might drive Nib's consumer-facing businesses as they grow to support Australians managing their everyday health."

The insurance provider is now operating thousands of workloads in AWS and is using microservices and serverless computing. In addition, Nib is using artificial intelligence (AI) services like Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Lex to develop an AI chatbot dubbed 'Nibby.' The chatbot has thus far handled more than 3.2 million inquiries.

The cloud migration has been conducted in compliance with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)'s Cloud Adoption Standards and Techniques (CAST) requirements.
