Spanish cloud company Gigas is to invest €3 million ($3.2m) this year in its Oni data center in Lisbon, Portugal.

Gigas acquired Portuguese telco Oni from MásMóvil in November 2020 for €40 million ($45m). The company operates two data centers in Portugal, in the Matinha area of Lisbon and Porto.

The company aims to double the number of data rooms the 2,000 sqm (21,530 sq ft) site offers to ten, with investments totaling €5 million ($5.4m) over the next 18 months.

“This investment represents a strong commitment to the Iberian market, especially with regard to cloud and data center services,” said Diego Cabezudo, CEO and co-founder of Gigas. “This is one of the most important and efficient expansions carried out by Gigas so that the Lisbon data center, a data center that currently has the largest available capacity of all the data centers in the city, is an important reference point and excellence.”

The company entered Portugal in 2019 after acquiring local cloud hosting provider AHP.

Gigas operates a total of eight data centers across Spain, Portugal, Colombia, Chile, the US, and Ireland. Many are leased spaces, however.

Cabezudo told Cinco Dias the company is open to acquiring a data center in Spain. The company currently operates out of two locations in Madrid and one in Barcelona.

However, Eco reports that when asked if Gigas would be interested in Altice's up-for-sale data center in Covilhã, Cabezudo dismissed the possibility.

November also saw Gigas acquire Portuguese fiber provider Alterlinks.
