New vice president and general manager James Mouton has barely warmed his seat at Dell before settling down to some major re-organisation. The four-month old Dell Datacenter Scalable Solutions (DSS) department has been axed, along with the eight-year old Data Center Solutions (DCS) section. The DSS unit was going to focus on the ‘just below hyperscale’ market but the new broom has decided that more radical reorganization is needed.
A new department has been created, called Dell Extreme Scale Infrastructure (ESI) - in effect, it is both DSS and DCS rolled into one overarching organization. Dell says ESI reflects its commitment to customers and partners, and allows the company to better communicate its broad capabilities.
Exploiting the strengths of hyperscale
Mouton said “there is no doubt that Dell is committed to the data center and hyperscale market,” and he made this point in a blog post announcing the new organizational structure – emphasizing that it was this strength that drew him to Dell.
The exec added that discussions with customers led him to decide that reorganization was necessary. Dell has to adapt to a broad range of needs of its hyperscale and sub-hyperscale customers, including telco, web tech, hosting, oil and gas, and research organizations.
Moulton went on to say that Dell needs to share the knowledge which it has gained working with “the largest companies in the world and applying those best practices to the next-generation of hyperscale companies.” It is not clear whether the new structure will mean job losses. However, having made such a big change early in his Dell career, Mouton will have to ensure that the Dell Extreme Infrastructure unit is seen succeeding, and quickly.
