BICS has announced the launch of a cloud-based roaming service with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

According to the Belgian company, the service will "enhance the mobile roaming experience by providing faster, more reliable Internet access."

BICS noted that the service is available to both mobile network operators (MNOs) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

The service aims to provide low-latency Internet access both in their home countries and abroad.

Low-latency is essential for a range of use cases such as connected cars, AR, drones, and more to thrive.

The partnership sees BICS migrating its roaming connectivity platform to AWS’s global infrastructure. BICS claims that because of this, it will be able to deliver roaming Internet up to five times faster than traditional international mobile roaming services.

It's enabled by AWS Transit Gateway, AWS Direct Connect, and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), and leverages AWS’s global footprint, including AWS Regions and AWS Local Zones.

The company has already worked with SK Telecom (SKT) and Proximus, who have both successfully tested and implemented cloud roaming.

SKT was able to achieve a latency of 90 milliseconds in a 5G connection between a mobile device in Spain and SKT’s mobile network in South Korea.
