Within the data center ecosystem, the building management system (BMS) is the cornerstone that keeps HVAC, fire suppression, lighting, power systems (including UPSs), and other critical controls running. It is also a prime target for cyberattacks. While operators understand the risk, they face the challenge of balancing operational efficiency with strong security controls.

Monitoring requirements add a layer of complexity with on-premises, remote, vendor, and tenant monitoring creating necessary access. However, they expand the attack surface and increase exposure when the BMS is connected to the wider internet.

  • How do we maintain operational efficiency while reducing exposures?
  • Where is the balance between shutting down access and leaving the environment too open?
  • Drawing parallels from other industries such as oil and gas and other regulated sectors, what are the best practices that can be translated into data center facilities?
  • How are monitoring demands shaping security strategy?
