The Business of Data Centers provides a clear, non-technical introduction to how the data center industry works and why it underpins today’s digital economy.

The course explains why data centers exist, how data is created and processed, how cloud and edge computing operate, and how different types of data center facilities support different business needs. It also demystifies commonly referenced industry concepts such as latency, uptime, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

By the end of the course, learners are equipped with the foundational knowledge and shared language needed to participate confidently in data center-related discussions and to engage more credibly with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.

Attended by an array of industry stakeholders including sales, finance, marketing and HR teams, this course is ideal for onboarding, cross-functional training, and sales enablement.

As an IACET Accredited Provider, DCD Ltd offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard. Contact us for further information.

No, this course has no pre-requisites.

This course is designed for professionals who work in or around the data center industry that need a foundational understanding of the sector, including sales, account management, marketing, finance, legal, HR, and project management teams. It is also well-suited to any new hire who needs foundational industry knowledge before they can participate meaningfully in internal discussions, client conversations, or cross-functional projects. No prior knowledge of data centers or technology is assumed.

Yes. DCD Academy is an IACET-accredited provider, and this course awards IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs) that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard. IACET accreditation is the internationally recognized standard for continuing education and training quality.

On completion you receive two credentials.

The first is a course completion certificate carrying a unique certificate ID for authenticity verification and a record of the continuing education credits earned. The certificate can be saved for personal records, attached to job applications, or uploaded to an internal HR or learning management system, making it straightforward for organizations to track training completion across teams.

The second is a verified digital badge issued through Credly, which can be shared directly to LinkedIn and other professional networks. For organizations running structured training programs, the digital badge gives learners a visible, shareable signal of their achievement and gives L&D teams an easy way to evidence program participation externally.

Yes, all DCD Academy courses result in continuing education credits. This course results in 0.8 CEUs (equivalent to 8 CPD).

After completing this course, learners can explain what data centers are, why they exist, and how they underpin the digital economy; describe the main types of data center facilities and operators; understand core industry concepts including latency, uptime, PUE, cloud computing, and edge infrastructure; participate in data center-related discussions with colleagues; and engage more credibly with customers and partners in conversations about data center infrastructure. It gives teams the shared language and context they need to build trust with customers and peers.

Organizations that put teams through this course typically see four concrete benefits. New hires reach a useful level of industry knowledge faster, reducing the time senior staff spend on foundational explanations. Non-technical teams (including sales, HR, finance, and marketing) are able to engage more credibly in conversations about the industry. Cross-functional teams develop a shared language and frame of reference for data center discussions, which reduces miscommunication between colleagues. And organizations running structured onboarding programs can use this course as a consistent, repeatable first step that standardizes baseline knowledge regardless of where or when a new hire joins.

Yes. Organizations training teams through DCD Academy can access the Workforce Development Platform, a proprietary tool that gives leaders real-time visibility into their team's capability levels, knowledge gaps, and confidence scores. Rather than relying on completion records alone, the platform turns training data into actionable workforce intelligence.

Before training begins, learners complete a diagnostics assessment that establishes a capability baseline, measuring both knowledge and confidence across the topics covered in the course. After training, the diagnostics is repeated, giving you a precise, quantifiable measure of knowledge gain and confidence improvement at the individual, team, and regional level. Leaders can monitor results through a live dashboard, filter by individual or team, and use the data to make informed decisions about where to focus further training investment.

For organizations building structured data center onboarding programs or managing training across multiple sites or shifts, the platform removes the guesswork from workforce development and gives you a defensible, evidence-based picture of team readiness.

DCD Academy is the only data center training provider that combines industry-recognized certifications, practitioner-designed courses, and a proprietary Workforce Development Platform that measures team capability in real time. DCD Academy training is developed from DCD's 26 years as the data center industry's leading intelligence source, meaning course content reflects current operational realities, not static syllabuses. We train teams across 87 countries, including hyperscalers, colocation providers, enterprise operators, advisors and vendors.
