UK-based cloud computing company iomart has opened the doors to its multi-million pound expansion at its carrier-neutral data center in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

The data center expansion was officially opened by UK home secretary Theresa May.

In total the extension took 12 months to complete and has the capacity to hold up to 630 racks which can contain up to 30,000 physical servers and as many as 500,000 virtual servers.

iomart bought the data center in 2009 as part of its acquisition of Maidenhead-based web hosting company RapidSwitch.

iomart claims the upgrade makes its one of the most advanced data centers in the UK.

The upgrade includes Cisco’s first major deployment of its Dynamic Fabric Automation and Bi Directional Transmission technology which allows network infrastructure and services to be automatically provisioned and scaled for customers.

May said data centers are an important part of the global economy.

“The technology on show is impressive and will allow businesses to be better connected than ever,” May said.

iomart said the data center expansion was designed to meet the needs of various hosting brands that make up its companies.

iomart owns and operates eight data centers throughout the UK and recently announced annual growth in revenue of 29% to £55.6m.

Last year iomart bought UK-based dedicated servers and managed services provider Redstation for £8.1m.
