Data center sustainability remains a disputable priority. As AI and cloud expansion increase energy demands, many countries rely heavily on oil and gas to meet demands, with green initiatives seemingly taking a back seat to rapid growth. Despite the gradual rise in solar and nuclear power, some grids still derive 90% of their energy from fossil fuels. This begs the question: why is sustainability not an integral part of this growth?
Global investors and tech giants, which MENA seeks to attract, are increasingly focused on sustainability, particularly Scope 3 emissions. As the EU and US enforce stricter environmental regulations, will MENA risk losing investment if it doesn’t prioritize sustainability?
But is this stance fair? Has this region shown that new cities and developments are models for sustainability, addressing distinctive challenges to MENA? Can this region do more to go green, or will innovation—and investment—dry up as sustainability becomes a global priority?
This DCD>Debate, conducted under Chatham House Rule, invites experts to dissect these critical industry questions.
