Google picks local contractor for submarine fiber link between Brazilian cities

Google is expanding its Latin American network with a subsea cable between Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo, to be installed by local fiber specialist Padtec.

The 390km cable will link the two coastal cities, touching down at Praia da Macumba beach in Rio de Janeiro and Praia Grande beach in Baixada Santista, hooking them into the rest of Google’s local fiber infrastructure.  The cable, with eight fiber  pairs, will be made in Brazil, using Padtec’s i6400G SLTE platform.

“Collaborating with Google on such an important project as a technological partner is exhilarating”, says Manuel Andrade, Padtec’s CEO. “Above all, we are very excited because it is a solution developed with in-country technology.”

Padtec has a turnkey system for subsea cables with its own submarine repeater, that was tested and qualified to withstand the harsh environment and high pressure that will be involved in projects like this.

The system should be fully deployed and operational in the second half of 2017.
