IT Security giant Kaspersky said it is considering another data center operation for Melbourne or Perth, to compliment its Sydney operations, bringing its number of data center in Australia to three.

While its Sydney data centers, colocated in other facilities, will be upgraded in coming months, granted predicted growth targets are met, Kaspersky could still finding itself requiring more capacity.

Choosing a location in another capital city will provide Kaspersky with better redundancy if its Sydney data center were to fail, Kaspersky cloud services director for APAC Bernie Bengler told Computerworld and Secure Computing magazine.

The end decision will depend largely on how many users the Russian company can get for its security services at the proposed site. It said it needs a critical mass of 20,000 to 25,000 new users to make another data center viable.

A number of data center service providers have started operations in Perth, on Australia’s west coast, in recent times, including Fujitsu and Harbour MSP. Its close position to Asia opens up new markets for data center service providers there, not to mention helps meet rising demand from the West Australia market, largely made up of government agencies and large mining firms and defence.

The new data center operation is also likely to be outsourced.
