DCD>Debate - European Energy Efficiency Directive: too big an obstacle or a magnet for data center investments?

The Data Center sector in the European Union is expected to experience a 28% increase in energy demand by 2030, compared to 2018 data. In an effort to address the growth in electricity demand and reduce carbon emissions on the continent, the European Union adopted the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) as part of the European Digital Strategy.

In this scenario, the Energy Efficiency Directive seeks to establish specific measures to address these challenges. Transparency in the environmental footprint, energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy sources and the reuse of waste heat become key elements for the sustainability of Data Centers in the European Union.

Therefore, in this debate we will discuss how these regulations are impacting Data Centres, whether they are prepared to face their requirements, whether the EED will be a support or an obstacle for the arrival of new investments in Europe, whether more regulations are synonymous with more or less investments or whether they provide security.
