Challenges and smart solutions for data center MEP installations

In this briefing we will explore how interface issues between design, construction, and operations drive schedule risk and quality problems in data center projects—and what can be done about it. We’ll set the scene with today’s realities (short time-to-market, rising power density, and increasing MEP/BIM complexity), then discuss the most common on-site challenges: models that aren’t directly buildable, late consideration of support systems, compressed engineering, and fragmented responsibilities. Building on this, we’ll review practical approaches such as design-for-installation, early and higher-detail BIM (LOD 300–400), standardized routing logic, modularization and prefabrication (including ready-to-install support and ELT tray systems), and more consistent digital data flow from design to execution. We’ll close with case examples showing how standardization, automated support placement, and prefabrication can reduce clashes, improve coordination, and accelerate installation.
