South Korean telco LG Uplus is to build a new data center in Paju, Gyeonggi-do.
Announced this week, the company said it will purchase real estate, including land and buildings in Paju owned by LG Display to establish a new hyperscale Internet data center (ICD).
The site area is 73,710 sqm (793,410 sq ft). Further building specifications and timelines weren't shared, though it will be the company’s largest facility.
The company said the development was driven by demand for AI and cloud services. The site will include GPUs and will utilize liquid and immersion cooling
An LG Uplus spokesperson said: “By securing a site where we can build a hyperscale IDC, we have been able to pre-emptively respond to the recently explosively increasing demand for data centers,” adding, “We have provided data centers to over 20 domestic and foreign IT companies.” “We will continue to secure the competitiveness of the IDC business based on our know-how in attracting and operating stably.”
The company has seven data centers in operation across Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The latest, the 12-story Pyeongchon 2, was completed last year.
Part of LG Corp, LG Uplus is the third-largest mobile operator in South Korea. Previously known as LG Telecom, it adopted the Uplus name in 2010 after merging with two other LG telecoms subsidiaries, Dacom and Powercom.
