Vodafone has built what it calls a ‘Super-Core’ data center in Berlin, Germany to support gigabit networks.

The “ready for 5G” data center is the company’s first Super-Core site, and Vodafone promises to build more.

Dr Eric Kuisch, technical managing director of Vodafone Germany, said (translated): “With the new Super-Core sites we built future-oriented data centers with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

“They are the base for processing huge amounts of data of millions of simultaneous phone calls at high speed.”

He added: “With ever-increasing amounts of data flowing through the network, the Super-Core sites prevent congestion and allow more people to communicate using smartphones and other machines at Gigabit speeds.”

A standard Vodafone data center processes more than a million gigabytes of data daily, but the company says that its Super-Core is over 20 times more powerful - it can process nearly 22 million gigabytes a day.

The facility is also three times the size of a normal Vodafone building, and has four times the cooling capacity. Vodafone claims that a single Super-Core data center can theoretically handle almost half of Germany’s phone calls simultaneously.
