New York Internet (NYI) has bought a data center in the Chicago area, which previously belonged to cloud services company Navisite.

Managed services company RDX bought the majority of Navisite in August, and this facility appears to have been sold to NYI in a parallel deal. NYI itself has two data centers in New York, and earlier this week sold one in New Jersey, presumably to fund its purchase in Chicago.

The data center formerly known as Navisite Oak Brook has 7,100 sq ft of white space for colocation, and access to 1.25MW of power, according to datacenters.com. NYI's announcement says it has fast access to Chicago, and will be good for Edge and IoT applications.

Selling in New Jersey and then buying in the Chicago area broadens NYI's footprint, according to Rob Powell at Telecom Ramblings: "They may not be in NJ anymore, but they still have two locations in NYC and now a presence in Chicago."

In the announcement, NYI co-founder and COO Phillip Koblence puts it this way: “We’re thrilled to enter the Chicago market and are ready to hit the ground running. The facility has incredible underlying fiber density and a strategic location that will give our clients maximum flexibility in terms of connectivity.”

NYI sells hybrid solutions involves cloud, colocation and containers on bare metal, and is a "high-touch" provider, meaning it promises more support and a "deeper level of partnership" than typical colo providers.

Remote data

For its part, RDX is a managed service provider (MSP) with a specialism in remote database administration. Backed by its owner, Madison Dearborn Partners. RDX has bought Navisite from its owner, telecoms firm Charter Communications. Navisite is a managed service provider, previously owned by Time Warner Cable; Charter has evidently decided to move out of the data center services industry and focus on telecoms.

RDX has been making a string of MSP acquisitions, having bought database-as-a-service provider ClearDB and AWS database migration specialists clckwrk this year.

Navisite is listed as having had around half a dozen data centers. Pittsburgh-based RDX picked up six - three in the US and three in the UK.

Correction: An earlier draft of this article said that NYI bought the data center from RDX. Since publication, RDX has contacted DCD to say that NYI bought the facility from Navisite, but the deal was not announced till after the purchase by RDX had been announced.
