When its clients experienced a spike in data center demand, the Finnish IT Center for Science Ltd (CSC), a non-profit state-owned company administered by the Ministry of Education and Culture, decided to install a modular data center.

CSC maintains and develops a state-owned centralized IT infrastructure, and opted for Data Center on Demand (DCoD), a modular, purpose-built prefabricated data center solution from CommScope, that can be on-site quickly and offers an alternative to bricks and mortar.

Speed of deployment

DCoD can be deployed in just 14 to 20 weeks—rather than two to three years for brick-and-mortar builds, and without the danger of overbuilding. It supports power densities from 5kW to 35kW per rack, and can be deployed indoors or outdoors and then expanded to provide hundreds of racks of capacity.

Once CSC placed the order, the modular data center was delivered in 16 weeks and installation at its site in Kajaani began. Assembly and acceptance testing was completed within two weeks.

“Our customer base is growing and their requirements are changing. We needed to provide more data center capacity in a scalable, environmentally friendly and cost-efficient way,” said Tero Tuononen, director ICT platforms, CSC. “The new modular data center concept from CommScope fits nicely into our portfolio.”

This is CSC’s second CommScope data center - it deployed its first one in 2012.

CSC provides nationwide IT services for research, libraries, archives, museums and culture as well as information, education and research management. CSC has offices in Espoo’s Keilaniemi and in the Renforsin Ranta business park in Kajaani.
