Adaptec introduced a storage controller which intelligently routes vital data to SSD storage.

The firm says the hybrid Max IQ addresses value and performance issues in distributed server environments by improving I/O speeds through dynamic routing of data when high performance and low response times are necessary.

Where traditionally data is transferred to standard RAID disks, the 'hybrid' controller routes the most often used data via SSD flash memory modules at a rate of up to 1.2 gbps.

"We are using SSD to bridge the performance gap between the traditional Hard Disk Drive and processor advances," Adaptec CEO Sundi Sundaresh: told DatacenterDynnamics. "An algorithm-based real time analysis tool looks at data. The algorithm is learning all the time looks for data that is frequently random read and directs it to be stored in the integrated SSD storage."


Sundi: evolving from speeds and feeds

"The 'MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution' is an industry "first" for building and managing intelligent, High-Performance Hybrid Arrays (HPHAs) that combine both solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs) to achieve I/O performance up to five times faster than HDD-only arrays and savings of up to 50 percent in capital and operating expenses.

Sundi said the focus of the company had changed with an emphasis shifting to providing more economic value rather than just speeds and feeds.

"With intelligent power management we use the cache of the controller as a buffer and, for example in an Exchange or Web server. It makes sense to synchronise the activities of the drives. There are times when you want to power down the drives and times when you don't want to power off the disks. "

The Data Conditioning Platform will help data center managers achieve meaningful "Green" objectives by minimizing the number of servers and storage devices previously required, and reducing direct system power and cooling power costs, it said.
