The cream of Europe's data center crop were honoured last month at the fourth DatacenterDynamics'(DCD) Datacentre Leaders'Awards.
From leading innovations to unmissable personalities, the awards brought the best of 2010 under the one roof for a night which not only highlighted the tenacity of the data center industry in what has been a tough year, but also the ingenuity that makes the complex industry work.
This year’s list of nominees had a pan-European reach. A data center in Valencia, Spain, designed and built by the Spanish company Tissat won the Innovation in the Medium Data Centre award. (Finnish company Helsingin Energia was also a finalist in the category.)
Tissat was not the only Spanish company to leave with an award. D-Alix won the Innovation in an Outsourced Environment award for design and construction of a data center in the Canary Islands. (Spanish readers can see more on our LATAM FOCUS pages here.)
The award for Innovation in the Mega-Data Center went to British bank Barclays for Project Dart, a 30,000sq m facility west of London.
Colocation player Capgemini won the 'Green'Data Centre award for its Merlin data center, built around sustainable principals while Telecity won the award for Improved Data Center Efficiency.
Data center personality Peter Gross had his contribution to the industry honoured, receiving the Outstanding Contribution to the Industry award. Gross currently works as a managing partner at HP’s Carbon, Power and Critical Facilities Services.
Equinix'European President Eric Schwartz also received the accolade of Data Centre Business Leader of the Year for his role in overseeing growth and driving Equinix through the difficult European financial crisis.
And one future name to look out for will be Young Mission Critical Engineer of the Year Luke Kubicki a mechanical engineer at Arup, after he received the special award at the ceremony.
