NetApp launches new high performance entry level systems

Storage vendor NetApp has launched two new storage systems to address different sectors of the market.

The high end FAS8080 EX is aimed at data centers looking for achieve ‘extreme performance’ while the low end FAS2500 is described as an entry level ‘value product’ for smaller data centers.

The FAS8080 EX is aimed at data centers with performance-intensive SAN and NAS workloads at the largest scale, according to NatApp, which it described as its ‘most powerful, patented scale-out array ever’. 

The system is capable of 4 million input-output operations per second (IOPS) and can be configured either as an all-flash array with 4.6 petabytes (PB) of flash storage or as a hybrid array with half a petabyte of flash cache.

NetApp claims the devices can be upgraded to 70PB of capacity and 600 I/O connections in data centers with a need to consolidate large workloads.

The entry-level FAS2500 hybrid arrays are designed to be simple plug and play systems that can simplify installation while keeping the user’s options open for future upgrades.

The device’s expanded flash support is designed to accelerate workloads by up to 46% and boost usable capacity by 48%.

George Kurian, NetApp executive VP said: “This is our highest-performance system ever and our best value entry level product.  We can make storage infrastructures substantially more efficient.”
