Facebook will use CA Technologies' Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software to monitor and measure its operations and improve efficiency at its international data centers.

CA completed a proof-of-concept and pilot at a 100,000 sq ft data center during Facebook’s DCIM vendor review process.

Facebook and CA have worked together to create a custom solution whcih they say can deliver on the energy-related DCIM requirements for the future.

Facebook’s VP of infrastructure for data centers Tom Furlong said the company is on a mission to connect the world and its IT infrastructure is “core to its success”.

“We are continually looking at ways to optimize our data centers and bringing all of our energy-related information together in one spot was a core requirement,” Furlong said.

The company said initial results of the Facebook and CA DCIM implementation have been presented at the Open Compute Project Summit 2014.

Facebook said 728m people actively use its site each day so expectations surrounding quality of service and availability are extremely high.

CA Technologies SVP of infrastructure management Terrence Clark said due to the high demand on IT infrastructure there is little room for error or costly inefficiencies.

“Facebook’s IT team can now bring this energy-related data into their broader DCIM system for an even more complete view of overall system status. They can then analyze all of the data in aggregate to make decisions to improve efficiency and reduce costs, while delivering a seamless customer experience and creating new opportunities for innovation,” Clark said.
