UK-based Aqua Cooling has launched a miniature cooling unit that slots into the bottom of a rack, or else under a raised floor, to apply up to 40kW of cooling to over-heated zones within data centers. 

The temperation unit, from Aqua Cooling, of Fareham Hampshire, takes up 8U of a rack, or else sits under a 300mm raised floor, and works with existing cooling systems. It is being shown off at the Data Centre World exhibition in London this week.

Aqua makes rear-door cooling systems, which use water flowing through cabinet doors to cool IT equipment. The temperation unit distributes cooling to particular hotspots in a data center.

In liquid cooling the company has won awards for its Leak Prvention System, an idea intended to calm data center operators who fear the use of liquids alongside electronic equipment. Instead of being pumped, the coolant is “sucked” along the tube. Aqua says that this means, in the event of a leak, air sucked into the coolant tube, rather than liquid leaking out .

“We believe our products have the potential to change the future of data centre cooling,” said Aqua’s data center product manager, Mike West. ”Not only can they be tailor-made to adapt to individual clients’ specific circumstances and needs but our systems are also environmentally-friendlier, energy saving and more cost-effective alternatives to many of the chiller systems currently used in the sector.”
