Colo provider Root Data Center has completed Phase I of a US$20 million facility in Montreal, Canada, designed to Tier III standards.

The site upports more than 500 server racks and 5MW of power. Thanks to its ability to cool over 30kW/rack, Root says it is attracting Bitcoin miners who use compute-intensive equipment to solve the algorithms that generate the cryptocurrency and allow the miners to claim new Bitcoins. The site  accepts Bitcoin as a payment.

Root had to accelerate the new build after an increase in customer demand. Root Data Center CEO Jason van Gaal said the rapid construction methodology the company used to build the Montreal facility enabled it to complete construction in early July but it waited until September to open due to delays in permits.

“We believe that Montreal has a growing data center market, where we have seen a strong demand from price sensitive cloud and software as a service (SaaS) clients looking for energy efficient and reliable data centers,” van Gaal said.

“Pre-sales demand was much stronger than anticipated. We have pre-sold over 60 percent of our space. One client is currently operating at a density of over 22kW/rack in 12 racks.”

ROOT Data Center will be hosting its grand opening celebration for the public and clients on October 16th.
