RagingWire, a Sacramento, California-based data center provider, is buying 75 acres of land in Ashburn, Virginia, from Loudoun County to ultimately build a 750,000 sq ft data center there, which will be its second in the city.

County officials have approved the US$20m land deal, the company announced Wednesday. The deal is very lucrative for the county, which bought the 100-plus-acre piece of land that includes the 75 acres being sold to RagingWire for $13.4m in 2004.

Even if the company’s future property remains undeveloped, the county will collect $200,000 a year in property taxes. If the development goes as planned, the land will potentially create more than $6m in annual revenue for the county, according to Raging Wire.

The company will share the 100-acre lot with an elementary school, as well as fields and recreation space.

Scott York, chairman of the county board of supervisors, said RagingWire’s continued investment was helping grow Loudoun’s high-tech sector. “This land sale is good for Loudoun and good for RagingWire's customers, which includes top enterprise, Internet, and government organizations,” he said.

RagingWire officially launched its first Ashburn data center in August. The company also has a data center in its home town Sacramento.
