US-based data center operator Quality Technology Services (QTS) is extending its Atlanta-Metro data center and building a new facility within the city, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

QTS said it will invest US$150m for the upgrade. The data center recently achieved LEED (Leadership in energy and environmental Design) Gold Certification for Phase II of  its buildout.

It currently has 970,000 sq ft of total space and has its own on-site Georgia Power Substation and direct fiber access to a variety of carrier alternatives.

The new facility could include up to 100,000sq ft of raised flood space.

QTS’s VP and general manager Butch Goldi said the downtown data center expansion is based on customer demand and the power infrastructure already built at the facility.

Goldi said the expansion of the Atlanta-Metro data center would be done in multiple phases.

The proposed new data center is set to be built on six acres of QTS owned land, adjacent to Atlanta-Metro.

Goldi said the expansion would not happen until at least 2016.
