NTT Communications Corp. has closed the acquisition of Virtela Technology Services, a managed and cloud-based network services provider.

Once services and operational integration is completed, the resulting provider will offer traditional enterprise network connectivity services as well as emerging types of services, such as hybrid MPLS and internet network for secure high-speed access to cloud services, NTT said.

The integration will not affect NTT customers with service migration or changes, the Japanese telco and IT services company said.

Its CEO Akira Arima said customers of both companies would benefit from the resulting portfolio. “Leveraging advanced virtualization technologies, such as Network Functions Virtualization, features such as firewall, WAN acceleration and SSL remote access will be delivered from network cloud,” he said.

“Furthermore, these features are automated for on-demand activation and configuration, helping enterprises save capital and operating expenses.”

NTT plans to make these features available to its customers starting in the second quarter.

In October, NTT acquired an 80% stake RagingWire, a US data center provider with massive facilities in Sacramento, California, and Ashburn, Virginia. Among RagingWire's largest customers is Twitter.

Last year, Twitter expanded its lease with the data center provider, signing for 20MW of capacity at the Sacramento site, according to a recent report from the real estate firm Avison Young.
